When You Need a Crown…
Having a healthy smile is important for daily health. We use our mouths for everyday functions like; eating, smiling, and talking. Keeping your teeth strong & healthy is very important. When there is an excessive amount of tooth decay, tooth fracture, or if a tooth has been compromised in any way, a crown or “cap” may be recommended.
What is a Crown?
A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the tooth’s appearance. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is broken down and fillings won't solve the problem.
When Do You Need a Crown?
Crowns are typically recommended because too much tooth has been lost due to decay or fracture and cannot be fixed with a filling. A crown covers the entire tooth to protect it and may be used for the following:
- Cracked tooth
- Restore a tooth that can’t support a large filling
- Attach a bridge
- Protect weak teeth from fracturing
- Restore fractured teeth
- Cover badly shaped or discolored teeth
How Long to Crowns Last?
Crowns should last approximately five to eight years. However, with good oral hygiene and supervision, most crowns will last for longer periods of time. Some damaging habits like grinding your teeth, chewing ice, and fingernail biting may cause this period of time to decrease significantly.
How Do You Take Care of Your Crown?
To prevent damaging or fracturing a crown, avoid chewing hard food, ice or other hard objects. Avoid teeth grinding, and make sure you’re brushing & flossing twice a day (especially between and around the crown).
